Designed and developed a multi-country VAT and accounting platform from the ground up — helping small and medium businesses move off Excel spreadsheets and manage purchases, sales, VAT filing, stock, and party balances from one simple, affordable system.
A spreadsheet problem, not just a software problem
Most small and medium businesses handle VAT and bookkeeping the same way: scattered Excel sheets, manual calculations, and a lot of hoping nothing gets missed before filing season. It works, until the business grows past what one spreadsheet — or one person's memory — can reliably hold.
The client wanted to give SMEs a way out of that: a genuinely free, easy-to-use VAT return and accounting platform, starting in Nepal and built to expand into India, the UK, Australia, and the UAE. Not a stripped-down free trial designed to push an upsell — a real, usable tool that businesses could run their books on from day one.
Where spreadsheets stopped being enough
- SMEs were tracking purchases, sales, VAT, and stock across manual spreadsheets, with no single source of truth
- Existing accounting software was often too expensive, too complex, or not built for how these businesses actually operate day to day
- The platform needed to support multiple countries and multiple tax systems (VAT and GST) from the start, not as an afterthought
- It needed to work for businesses with very different needs — some tracking full inventory and stock, others just wanting simple direct billing
- Hosting and running costs had to stay low, since the product needed to be genuinely free for users while still being sustainable to operate
- The product needed to attract its own customers organically — through search and content — rather than relying on paid ads or a sales team
- Every part of the system had to be built with real financial accuracy in mind, since the numbers it produces are what businesses use to file real VAT returns
This wasn't only a software problem. It was a chance to give SMEs a genuine alternative to spreadsheets — one that had to work across countries, tax systems, and business types, while staying free, fast, and financially accurate from day one.

How I approached this project
- Worked directly with the client to shape the product vision and business requirements
- Designed the full data model and system architecture from the ground up
- Built the platform end to end — authentication, core accounting modules, reporting, admin tools, and the public site
- Made the underlying technical and business-rule decisions that keep the platform accurate for real financial reporting
- Set up the hosting, database, and content infrastructure to keep the platform fast, affordable, and easy to maintain
- Continued as the platform's ongoing engineer — refining features and supporting it as a live system used by real businesses
